Key Takeaways

  • Dubai will lead the world in air mobility with fully operational flying taxis by 2026, CEO of Skyports, Duncan Walker.
  • Dubai plans to establish a comprehensive network of vertiports for permanent air taxi services, marking a significant leap in air travel technology.
  • A vertiport, designed for electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft, is distinct from conventional helipads and supports multiple drones with charging capabilities.
  • Flying taxis are anticipated to drastically reduce travel times, with a 45-minute commute from Dubai International Airport (DXB) to Palm Jumeirah shortened to just six minutes.
  • Environmental benefits include zero carbon emissions during operational missions and a notable reduction in ground congestion, shaping a greener and more efficient urban transportation landscape.

Dubai Flying Taxis

Dubai is set to lead the world in air mobility as the city aims for full-scale operations of flying taxis by 2026, according to Duncan Walker, CEO of London-based company Skyports, responsible for building the UAE’s first vertiport. Walker made this confident proclamation during the 3rd Dubai World Congress for Self-Driving Transport.

In a significant display of the project’s progress, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, along with Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, were presented with a model of the vertiport by Mattar Al Tayer, RTA director general and chairman of the board of executive directors.

Vertiport (eVTOL)

The term “vertiport” refers to a specialized facility designed to cater to electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft, including air taxis, in contrast to traditional helipads. Dubai is ambitiously working towards establishing a fully-developed network of vertiports for permanent air taxi services.

Locations / Places for Flying Taxis

The key vertiport, located near Dubai International Airport (DXB), will initially connect major areas like Palm Jumeirah, Dubai Downtown, and Dubai Marina.

Flying Time

With top speeds of 300 kmph and a maximum range of 241 km, these aerial taxis aim to significantly reduce travel times, enabling a 45-minute commute from DXB to Palm Jumeirah to be slashed to just six minutes.

Flying Taxi Price / Cost

In the near future, flying in air taxis over Dubai might be as economical as a typical Uber ride, according to a high-ranking official from the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA). Ahmed Bahrozyan, the CEO of The Public Transport Agency at RTA, mentioned that the cost of flying in these aerial taxis could approach the affordability of a standard Uber ride. This projection suggests that both residents and visitors could avail of air taxi services as early as 2026.

Environment Friendly / Sustainability / Eco Friendly

Moreover, flying taxis promise environmental benefits with zero carbon emissions during operational missions and contribute to reduced ground congestion. Dubai’s dedication to advancing transport technology is underscored by efficient government coordination, established regulatory frameworks, viable infrastructure, and robust business demand, positioning the city at the forefront of future transport developments.
